چکیده

The Illain purpose of this paper is to provide a brief survey of what has CODle to be known as "prophet inequalities" or ~~prophet problerns" in the t heory of optirnal stopping. rrhis survpy includes surnrnaries of the basic results, subs e quent extensioIls and variations of these results, Blain proof tools an d techniques (with concrete exarllples), a,ad a list of open problenls. Although the terrIl "prophet" has been used in other rnathernatical a nd proba bilistic contexts, the expression "prophet inequality" in optirnal stoppin g theory is generally associated with the following problern. Given a class C of sequenc es of integrable randolll variables X == (Xl, X2,"')' find universal inequalities valid for all X in C which cornpare the expected suprerllUrl1 of the sequence with the optirnal stopping value of the sequence. That is, if M denotes the expect ed

Automated Online Mechanism Design and Prophet Inequalities

Recent work on online auctions for digital goods has explored the role of optimal stopping theory — particularly secretary problems — in the design of approximately optimal online mechanisms. This work generally assumes that the size of the market (number of bidders) is known a priori, but that the mechanism designer has no knowledge of the distribution of bid values. However, in many real-worl...

Optimal Stopping, Ruin Probabilities and Prophet Inequalities for L Evy Processes

Solution to the optimal stopping problem V (x) = sup E(x + X) + is given, where X = fXtg t0 is a L evy process, and the supremum is taken over the class of stopping times. Results are expressed in terms of the distribution of the random variable M = sup t Xt, under the hypothesis E(M) < +1, and simple conditions for this hypothesis to hold are given. Based on this, the prophet inequality V (x) ...

An application of prophet regions to optimal stopping with a random number of observations

Let X1,X2, . . . be any sequence of nonnegative integrable random variables, and let N ∈ {1, 2, . . . } be a random variable with known distribution, independent of X1,X2, . . . . The optimal stopping value supt E(XtI(N ≥ t)) is considered for two players: one who has advance knowledge of the value of N , and another who does not. Sharp ratio and difference inequalities relating the two players...

Matroid Prophet Inequalities and Bayesian Mechanism Design

Consider a gambler who observes a sequence of independent, non-negative random numbers and is allowed to stop the sequence at any time, claiming a reward equal to the most recent observation. The famous prophet inequality of Krengel, Sucheston, and Garling asserts that a gambler who knows the distribution of each random variable can achieve at least half as much reward, in expectation, as a "pr...

A Curious Connection Between Branching Processes and Optimal Stopping

A curious connection exists between the theory of optimal stopping for independent random variables, and branching processes. In particular, for the branching process Zn with o spring distribution Y , there exists a random variable X such that the probability P (Zn = 0) of extinction of the nth generation in the branching process equals the value obtained by optimally stopping the sequence X1; ...
